In Ireland, the Treatment Benefit Scheme, funded by Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) contributions, entitles certain individuals to free dental examinations. This article explores the eligibility criteria for availing of this benefit.
Who is eligible for a free dental exam under the Treatment Benefit Scheme?
To qualify for a free dental examination, you must meet the following PRSI contribution requirements:
- You must have at least 260 paid PRSI contributions since first starting work, and
- You must have at least 39 paid or credited contributions in the relevant tax year, of which at least 13 must be paid contributions. The relevant tax year is the second last complete tax year before the year in which you make your claim. For example, for claims made in 2024, the relevant tax year is 2022.
Eligible PRSI Classes:
Not all PRSI classes provide entitlement to Treatment Benefits. The main eligible classes are:
- Class A (most private sector employees)
- Class E (certain public servants)
- Class P (self-employed fishermen and women who pay an optional additional PRSI contribution)
- Class S (self-employed people)
Frequency of Free Dental Exams:
If you meet the PRSI contribution requirements, you are entitled to one free dental examination per calendar year. This means that if you qualify and have a dental exam in 2024, you’ll be eligible for another free exam in 2025.
What does the free dental exam cover?
The free dental examination under the Treatment Benefit Scheme includes a thorough check-up of your teeth, gums, and mouth by a qualified dentist. The dentist will assess your oral health, identify any issues or potential problems, and provide advice on maintaining good dental hygiene.
If the dentist determines that you require additional dental treatments, such as fillings or extractions, these services are not covered under the free dental exam. However, you may be eligible for subsidized dental treatments under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, subject to certain conditions and limits.
How to claim your free dental exam?
To avail of your free dental examination, you must visit a dentist who is registered with the Department of Social Protection. You can find a list of registered dentists on the department’s website or by contacting them directly.
When you visit the dentist, inform them that you wish to claim your free dental exam under the Treatment Benefit Scheme. The dentist will then check your eligibility and provide the necessary paperwork for you to sign.
